Ingredients:

  • 8-10 large whole wheat tortillas (10”round)

For the tuna-taco filling:

  • Salsa (2 tbs. for tuna, more for serving)
  • 3 tbs. whole grain breadcrumbs
  • 2 6 oz. cans white tuna in water
  • 3 tsp. vegetable oil
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • ¼ tsp. cumin
  • ½ tbs. lime juice

For the garnish:

  • Shredded lettuce
  • Tomato, chopped
  • Shredded lowfat Mexican blend cheese
  • fresh cilantro (coriander) for seaweed garnish
  • 1 tsp. sour cream, to stick eyes on
  • Pimento-stuffed olive slices (for eyes)

Supplies

  • Clean safety scissors
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Frying pans
  • Measuring spoons
  • Mixing bowls
  • Serving dish
  • Shark template
  • Small containers (to hold ingredients that Sproutlets will add!)
  • Spatula
  • Spoon
  • Tongs

Directions

  1. Start by measuring all ingredients and setting out in small containers to make it easier for Sproutlets to get involved in the kitchen action!
  2. Print out the shark template. Fold tortillas in half and use template to cut into the shape of sharks! Don’t forget that they have to fold at the bottom of the belly to hold the taco ingredients!
  3. Open folded tortillas and ask a Grown-up Sprout to warm them in a frying pan. In a non-stick pan, no oil should be necessary. Fold back into shape after warmed and set aside, wrapped in paper towel or dishcloth to retain warmth and moisture, until all tortillas are warmed.
  4. Make tuna-taco filling by mixing vegetable oil, tuna, seasonings, breadcrumbs, 2 tablespoons salsa, and lime juice in a pan and sauté until breadcrumbs turn golden brown. A Sproutlet can add all the tuna-taco filling ingredients into a cold pan at one time and a grown up can transfer the pan to the cooking surface and do the cooking.
  5. Sproutlets can fill tortillas with tuna mixture, shredded lettuce, tomato and cheese. Then add one eye to each shark by sticking on an olive slice with a dab of sour cream.
  6. Top with salsa and garnish with cilantro, if desired.
  7. Stand back, admire your Ar, Ar, Ar-tfully created fish tacos made in honor of Finbar, the mighty shark! Gobble them up, shark-style, before they get away!
