- large glass of water
- ice cubes
- salt
- string

- Do you think that you can get an ice cube out of a glass of water using a piece of string?
- Here's a way that you can. The magic ingredient is salt.
- Drop an ice cube into a glass of water.
- Put a pinch of salt on the ice cube.
- Drag the string over the ice cube.
- Now put a little more salt on top of the string. In about three minutes try lifting the ice out of the water with the string. The string becomes attached to the ice.
- This works because the salt melts the ice and makes a small puddle of water on top of the ice cube. The puddle then re-freezes a little bit around the string and you have "rising ice."
- Salt does interesting things to ice. In the winter, it's used to melt ice on the streets. You can also use ice to make CafeZOOM's Easy Ice Cream in a baggie.
