Sweets Get a Failing Grade as Congress Takes on Junk Food
So what are you eating at school? Fruits or candy? Congress worries about your answer!
The number of overweight kids is going up and up. Some members of Congress place part of the blame on the kinds of food sold in schools. So they asked the Institute of Medicine to figure out which foods should stay and which should go.
According to the Institute's findings, schools should offer fruit, vegetables, and breads made from whole grains. Candy, soda, and salty foods like potato chips should be zapped!
Senator Tom Harkin, a Democrat from Iowa, was happy with the list. He said it was a gold standard for nutrition in schools. But not everyone shares his feelings.
The School Nutrition Association thought the report was good, but that it's too difficult to enforce unless it was a law. Right now, the list is only voluntary.
The Center for Consumer Freedom works for companies that sell the foods not on the list. They don't want their foods banned. They complain that the obesity problem is caused by kids not getting enough exercise and not by what they eat.
In any case, it's obvious that eating snacks like raisins, low-fat yogurt, certain kinds of granola bars and multigrain tortilla chips is a good thing. That and exercise will keep you healthy and fit!
