what's supposed to be a symbol and what's not. Let's say you have a dream that has a spaceship in it. Is this supposed to be a symbol of your excitement over an upcoming move, or is it just in your dream because you watched Star Wars before you went to bed? Dreams contain a lot of strange things, and many of them are there just because your brain is mixing up lots of goofy thoughts and images.
Another problem with dream symbols is that they can mean very different things depending on who you are and what your life is like. Let's say someone dreams about an apple. If the apple is supposed to be a symbol, it would mean very different things to a professional apple grower, a person who repairs Macintosh computers, and someone who lives in New York (the "Big Apple").
There are a lot of books out there that list the meanings of dream symbols, and these can be fun, but you shouldn't take them too seriously or think that they can tell you much about who you are. The apple in your dream might just be an apple, and even if it does have a symbolic meaning, it's probably a meaning that's unique to you. Everyone is an individual, and even though we share some basic "universal dreams," the images and symbols in our dreams are individual, too.
