The streets of Winterveldt make room for special trees. They are called Morula trees and they grow very sweet fruit that is used in the home-made beer from this region.

Traditional walls
By Edward Modiga

These walls have holes! That's because in the past, people had to see if an enemy was coming. They could then defend themselves, or run away. That's why the people here say these walls have hide-holes.

Houses in this section of town are made of mud-bricks, corrugated steel and siding. Many of these houses don't have electricity, so people use oil lamps at night.

Winterveld is a country town. There are no big high rises or sidewalks. Some students who live outside of town have to walk two or more miles to school. Some live too far to walk and have to ride the bus. Many students live with their grandparents, because their parents are away working in Pretoria, or Johannesburg.
