IML Quick Discussion Guide: Sibling Rivalry

Prior to using this Quick Discussion Guide, you and your child may want to do any or all of the following activities on "It's My Life":

  • Read the "Sibling Rivalry" article.

  • Work together to come up with a "You Said It" submission for this topic.

  • Print out the IML Journal page "Sibling Rivalry." Complete it together or encourage your child to complete it on his/her own.

Discussion Questions:

  • Have you been having any problems with one of your brothers or sisters lately?

  • Do you feel like you're always competing with one of your siblings? If so, why do you think this competition exists?

  • Have you been feeling jealous of a brother/sister lately? Why? How do you think you can feel less jealous?

  • Do you feel like you have to work extra hard for attention from us?

  • Do you feel like we treat you fairly in comparison with your siblings?

  • Does it seem like we pay more attention to one of your brothers or sisters? Can you give an example?

  • What can we do to make you feel more appreciated?

Remember:
--Try having a family meeting night, where each kid gets a chance to say whatever is on his or her mind. Listen to each kid, and treat all opinions and grievances with equal weight.
