PBS Kids It's My Life
IML Quick Discussion Guide: When Friends Fight

Prior to using this Quick Discussion Guide, you and your child may want to do any or all of the following activities on "It's My Life":

  • Read the "When Friends Fight" article

  • Work together to come up with a "You Said It" submission for this topic.

  • Print out the crossword puzzle and/or IML Journal page "When Friends Fight." Complete it together or encourage your child to complete it on his/her own.

Discussion Questions:

  • How are things going between you and your friend(s)?

  • I've noticed some tension between you and your friend(s). What's been going on?

  • Can you remember how the conflict started?

  • How important is it that you keep being friends?

  • How big do you think this conflict is?

  • Are you more upset about what caused the argument, or are you more upset about the fact that you're in a fight?

  • Do you feel like one of you should be the first to apologize?

  • Do you feel like it's important for you to be the "winner" of this fight, or do you just want to be good friends again?

  • Do you think you and your friend(s) are being fair to each other?

  • Would you feel more comfortable bring an adult into this situation to help mediate things, like one of the parents or a school counselor? How can we arrange that?

Remember:
--Children look at things from a different perspective, and fights that seem silly to you might be very important to them.

--Your child's friendships might be as important to him or her as your relationships are to you.
