PBS Kids It's My Life
IML Quick Discussion Guide: When Your Family Moves

Prior to using this Quick Discussion Guide, you and your child may want to do any or all of the following activities on "It's My Life":

  • Read the "When Your Family Moves" article.

  • Work together to come up with a "You Said It" submission for this topic.

  • Print out the Crossword Puzzle and/or IML Journal page "When Your Family Moves.” Complete it together or encourage your child to complete it on his/her own.

Discussion Questions:

  • How does the thought of moving make you feel?

  • Does the thought of moving make you think you have no say in your life?

  • What concerns you the most about moving?

  • What can we do before the move that would help make it easier to say goodbye to people and places that mean a lot to you?

  • What might we do after the move to help you stay in touch with old friends?

  • What are some of the things that excite you about the idea of moving?

  • Is there anything you’d like to ask about your new home, town, or school?

  • Would it help to see pictures of where we’re going to live?

  • Are there any clubs, sports or organizations we can look into that might make living in our new town fun, or might help you make new friends?

Remember:
--There’s probably a lot of information on the Web about your new area, town or city, and school system. Try to spend some online time together in a “virtual” exploration of your future home. You might also create an online “scavenger hunt” for your child with a list of facts, figures, and points of interest related to where you’re moving. Start with the “regional” sections of major search engines or the Web sites for local newspapers and television stations.
