IML Quick Discussion Guide: Pets

Prior to using this Quick Discussion Guide, you and your child may want to do any or all of the following activities on "It's My Life":

Discussion Questions:

  • Why do you want a pet?

  • What kind of pet do you want?

  • What responsibilities are you willing to take on to care for our pet? Are you willing to give up an activity or some of your social life in order to take care of this pet?

  • How can I help you learn how to care for your pet? Can we work together to learn what your pet needs for food, shelter, health care, and grooming?

  • If we get a dog, can we go to training classes together?

  • If you find a lost animal – wild or a pet – what should you do?

  • If you see an animal being abused, what should you do?

  • Can we volunteer together at a local shelter to learn about different kinds of animals and how to take care of them?

Remember:
--Teaching your child how to take care of a pet will teach them about responsibility. Pets can also be good for their self-esteem, health, and overall well-being. Work with them on creating pet rules – for them and the animal. Look into volunteer programs at local shelters and humane societies and offer to volunteer with your child.

--How you treat animals will set an example for your child. Be patient, gentle, and loving with your pets and your child will follow your lead.
