IML Quick Discussion Guide: Drug Abuse

Prior to using this Quick Discussion Guide, you and your child may want to do any or all of the following activities on "It's My Life":

Discussion Questions:

  • What have you heard about drugs from your friends and classmates?

  • Are you learning about drugs in school? What are the lessons like?

  • Do you hear about kids in your school, or maybe their older brothers and sisters, abusing drugs?

  • How do you see drugs being portrayed in TV shows and movies? What do you think are the “messages” they’re delivering to viewers?

  • Have you ever been offered drugs? If so, what did you say or do?

  • Do you know the kinds of things that drugs can do to your body and mind? Do you have any questions about rumors you’ve heard?

  • What are your feelings about young people who choose to use drugs?

  • Is there anything else you want to ask me about drugs?

Remember:
--Make sure your kids know the range of consequences of using drugs; not only the legal and health consequences, but the consequences in your family as well.

--If a child decides to abuse drugs, it is often a sign of deeper problems. Knowing what your children are going through, and how they are dealing with emotional issues, is an important way to keep them from being tempted to try illegal drugs.

--Ignoring society’s drug problem will not make the issue go away, and many kids are coming into contact with drugs at a very young age. Arming them with the honest facts about the many dangers drug abuse boosts their ability to make informed, ethical decisions.
