IML Quick Discussion Guide: Dreams

Prior to using this Quick Discussion Guide, you and your child may want to do any or all of the following activities on "It's My Life":

  • Read the "Dreams" article.

  • Work together to come up with a "You Said It" submission for this topic.

  • Print out the crossword puzzle and/or IML Journal page "Dreams." Complete it together or encourage your child to complete it on his/her own.

Discussion Questions:

  • What have your dreams been like lately? Can you describe some of them?

  • Have these dreams been making you happy, or upset?

  • If you've been having good dreams, what about them makes you happy?

  • Are there things in these good dreams that you would like to see happen in your real life?

  • If your dreams have been bad ones, what about them scares you or makes you upset?

  • Are these dreams just about generally scary things, or do you think they have some connection to what's going on at home or school?

  • Is there any dream that you're having over and over? Is it good or bad? Why do you think you might be having this dream so often?

  • Do you want my help in trying to change or stop a dream that has been bothering you?

  • Do you have dreams that inspire you to create anything, like a drawing or a poem?

  • Do you want my help in turning your best dreams into something we can share?

Remember:
--There's a fine line between interpreting your child's dreams and over-analyzing them. Sometimes dreams can point to issues in real life, and sometimes they're just dreams. Try your best to tell one kind of dream from the other.

--Dreams are important to everyone, and can help make sense of your child's life and inspire imagination and creativity. But never forget that it's what's goes on in your child's waking life that's most vital to his or her happiness and well being.
