ILAC Story
Using a paper cut-out of a person and another paper cut-out of the person's heart, begin telling the following story:
Each and every day we all get up and put on our ILAC sign. ILAC stands for 'I am Loveable and Capable.' All of you are lovable and capable. All of you need to respect not just your own ILAC sign, but everyone's else's as well. Each day we face many things and choices. Each day we awake with our ILAC sign intact. As we go through the day, things can happen to tear away our ILAC signs.
Take for example my friend ILAC. ILAC gets up in the morning. He gets dressed, eats breakfast, hugs his mother, and heads to the bus stop. At the bus stop, a group of boys have already formed and ILAC becomes the focus of their attention. When ILAC arrives at the stop the boys "pop" his books from his hands and ILAC's books and papers are scattered all over the lawn. The boys laugh as ILAC scrambles to rescue his homework and rearrange his books. He has no idea where his homework is in all of this mess, and the bus arrives as he is still picking up his stuff.
(Rip off one part of ILAC's heart)
ILAC rushes on to the bus and chooses to sit alone, since he doesn't want to be the subject of another so-called joke. Although he laughed along with boys when they popped his books, deep down inside he was hurt and upset. He is really quite miffed by the fact that his longtime best friend joined in the laughter and never made an attempt to help him pick up his stuff.
(Rip another piece of ILAC's heart)
He and his so-called "best friend" have known each other since they were in kindergarten. What does this say about the relationship now? ILAC ponders how it got to this point.
ILAC settles into his classroom and when asked to show his homework to the teacher, he cannot find it in the mess of papers stuffed in his bag and receives an "F." His teacher makes a comment about him needing to be more organized and how disappointed she was in him not completing the homework.
(Rip another piece of ILAC's heart)
Two boys who were at ILAC's bus stop snickered when the teacher reprimanded ILAC for not having his homework, and ILAC heard them. ILAC thought they were his friends and he was hurt that they would follow the crowd.
(Rip another piece of ILAC's heart)
ILAC continues through his day and seems to be forgetting about the morning episode until recess arrives. ILAC normally plays in the kickball game with his classmates. He is not the best athlete, but he plays hard and enjoys laughing and talking with his friends. Today, ILAC enters the kickball diamond like any other day, looking forward to the game. The boy who popped his books is also in the diamond and seems to have it out for ILAC. ILAC again becomes the victim of this boy's antics. ILAC hears him loudly proclaim, "We don't want you on our team, you stink. Go play jump rope with the girls." Several of ILAC's friends are there and none of them stick up for him for fear they are the next target.
(Rip another piece of ILAC's heart)
ILAC stands up to the bully and says, "No I am playing kickball." Rather sarcastically the bully replies, "Fine, but not on my team!" ILAC looks around and finds all of his friends siding with the bully. ILAC walks away with his head hung low.
(ILAC's heart is ripped in pieces)
