PBS Kids GO! It's My Life
Sibling Rivalry

Discussion questions for kids to bring up with adults

I feel like my sister/brother is making everything into a contest or competition. What can I do?

I feel like I have to work really hard and always be the best at everything in order to win your praise. What do you think about that?

I've been very jealous of my brother/sister lately. How can I stop feeling so jealous?

I feel like my siblings and I never do anything together anymore. Can we do more things as a family?

It feels like you place more importance on my brother or sister than you do on me. Are you aware of this?

I can't stop feeling like I have to do everything better than my siblings. How can I get past these feelings?

Remember:
--"Fair" and "equal" are not the same thing. Your parents don't have to treat all their children exactly the same, as long as the way they treat each of you is based on some sense of fairness. For example, you may not have exactly the same belongings and freedoms as a sibling, because you are different people with different needs.

--If a sibling makes everything a contest, you don't have to put up with it. Let your parents know that you don't want to be in a constant competition with your brother or sister. Also, tell a parent, teacher or adult if a sibling hurts or abuses you in any way.
