20 Questions
All you need to play this great game are players with unlimited imaginations. One player thinks of a person, place or thing, while the others try to guess what it is by asking no more than twenty "yes" or "no" questions. If one player guesses the mystery object correctly in twenty questions or fewer, then it’s his or turn to think of something. If not, the first player reveals what they had in mind and gets to go again.
Road Trip Scavenger Hunt
In order to play this game on the road, players should make a list, before they even leave, of ten things they might see or do during the trip. Some examples of a list might include passing a farm, seeing a dog with its head out the window, hearing a certain song on the radio, finding a license plate from a different state, getting a trucker to honk, seeing a billboard with an ad for a movie, and waving at three guys with beards. The first person to accomplish everything on the list wins!
License Plate Blackjack
In this game, players try to find the numbers 1 to 21, in that order, on the license plates of passing cars. Each license plate can be used by only one player, and players can use only one number from each license plate. When a player spots the number, he or she must say it out loud before anyone else does. The first person to get to 21 wins. To make the game a little more interesting, add a slight twist to the rules: Players can add up the numbers on the license plates to get a different number. For example, if you pass a license plate that says 4Y812R7, besides claiming 8, 1, or 2, you can say 11 (8 +1 +2) or 20 (8 + 12).
Impressions
See if you can stump your travel mates when you take turns imitating people known to all the other participants. These can be famous actors, characters on TV, or even your math teacher. The players aren’t allowed to say who they're mimicking or give any hints or clues. The first person to guess who’s being imitated gets a point. To make the game more fun, you can act out scenes from a movie that everyone else has seen and try to have them guess which movie it is.
Motor Bingo
In order to play this game, before the trip, players must create bingo cards (a 5 x 5 grid with 25 squares) with a letter or number in each square. Be sure to use some double-digit numbers as well. When on the road, players must pay attention to the license plates of passing cars for the corresponding number or letter on their card. When they find one, they can put a cross through that square. The first person to cross off five squares in a row either across, down, or diagonally wins. Be sure to use a writing tool that’s erasable so you can play more than once!
Name That Tune
Here's a game that's great for those who are really into music. Flip on the radio and search the different stations for songs. If one of the players recognizes whatever is on at that moment, he or she must try to be the first one to say what it is. If the guess is right, the player earns a point. If he or she is incorrect, another player can guess. If nobody knows the song, whoever is in charge of the radio moves on. If you don’t have a radio, one player can think of a song that everybody knows and hum its first few notes. The other players try to guess the name of the song. If they can't guess, the first player keeps humming more notes in the song until someone comes up with the right answer.
