This is an ikapa or a calabash. It is a type of gourd that gets very hard on the outside after it is grown. People here use the calabash for all kinds of things, from bowls to cups.

Not many people have running water in their homes, so they go to this central drinking fountain to get water. To use it, you must have a card and pay for the water.


Winterveldt is in a dry savanna region, so water is very precious. Not many families have running water in their homes, so they have to go to communal water areas. Just like anywhere, though, everyone has chores to do, from weeding the garden to doing the laundry.
